CBD with Pharmacists vs Holistic Medicine

How does the education and backgrounds for pharmacists differ from natural and holistic medicine practitioners?

Pharmacists and natural or holistic medicine practitioners have substantially different educational backgrounds and training.

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who are trained to dispense and manage medications. In the United States, pharmacists must complete a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, which typically takes four years to complete.

Pharm.D. programs include coursework in pharmacology, pharmacotherapy, and medicinal chemistry, as well as clinical rotations in various healthcare settings. After completing a Pharm.D. program, pharmacists must pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) in order to become licensed to practice.

In addition to the Pharm.D. program and the NAPLEX, one will also need to pass a Multistage Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) or state-specific examination to obtain a state pharmacy license to practice as a pharmacist.

Holistic medicine, on the other hand, is a approach to healthcare that considers the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – when treating health conditions. Holistic medicine practitioners may have a variety of educational backgrounds and may use a range of natural therapies to treat health conditions. Some holistic medicine practitioners may have a degree in naturopathic medicine, which typically involves four years of training at a naturopathic medical school.

Naturopathic medical schools may offer courses in nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and other natural therapies. Other holistic medicine practitioners may have training in acupuncture, chiropractic, or other alternative therapies.

There are many types of natural medicine practitioners, including:

  1. Acupuncturists: These practitioners use thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body to promote healing and alleviate pain.

  2. Chiropractors: Chiropractors use spinal adjustments and manipulations to improve the function of the nervous system and relieve pain.

  3. Naturopathic doctors: Naturopathic doctors use a combination of natural therapies, such as nutrition and herbal medicine, to treat a wide range of health conditions.

  4. Homeopaths: Homeopaths use very dilute amounts of natural substances to stimulate the body's natural healing processes.

  5. Massage therapists: Massage therapists use touch to manipulate the soft tissues of the body to improve circulation, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension.

  6. Herbalists: Herbalists use plants and herbs to treat a wide range of health conditions and to promote overall health and well-being.

  7. Nutritionists: Nutritionists help people develop healthy eating habits and choose the right foods to support their health goals.

  8. Ayurvedic practitioners: Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine from India that uses herbal remedies, diet, and other natural therapies to treat a wide range of health conditions. Ayurvedic practitioners are trained in this system of medicine.

It is important to note that the education and training of holistic medicine practitioners may vary widely, and there may be differences in the types of treatments they offer and the level of regulation they are subject to. For example, in the United States, chiropractors and naturopathic doctors are licensed in many states, while acupuncturists, massage therapists, and nutritionists may be licensed or regulated by the state or may be certified by a professional organization.

In some cases, natural medicine practitioners may be required to complete a certain amount of continuing education in order to maintain their license or certification. It is important to check with the relevant regulatory body or professional organization to determine the specific education and licensing requirements for a particular type of natural medicine practitioner.

If you are considering seeing a holistic medicine practitioner, it is a good idea to research their education and training and to speak with a healthcare professional to determine if their services are appropriate for your needs.
